Documentary FAMILY Photography

Be yourself!

Have you ever wished you had amazing photographs of your family and friends that show your unique personalities? The way you all interact with each other on a ‘normal day’. Real moments; real memories.

Don't get me wrong - I still love to take portraits when the time comes. But photography can be so much more than awkwardly posed photos with you all dress up in matching outfits and fake smiles. I focus on documentary photography that captures candid moments the way you remember them.

“Dan was amazing! He captured our day perfectly & took stunning photographs when we weren’t even aware he was taking pictures. He went above & beyond for us & we couldn’t be happier with the memories of our day. Thank you, Dan.”

 Hi, I’m Dan Higginson

Old punk, meditator, photographer.

Dan Higginson-1-3-1_1.jpg

I’m a documentary family photographer based in Kent.

When I’m not digging through vinyl, or making cocktails, I love to get out my old film cameras and document my own family.

We tend to sleep walk through life, kids grow up so fast, and memories fade. We lose the beautiful moments.

My documentary approach shows you and your loved ones how you really are. No posing, no stressing over mess, and defiantly no saying ‘cheese’!

I believe your photographs of your family are the most valuable thing you own. These are the people we love the most, unconditionally. Ask any grandparent if they’d rather give up their family photographs or their most expensive possession.

Reach out; I'd love to introduce myself properly and answer any questions.

Reportage Photography

noun. (pronounced “report-arje”) - from reporter, to report, from Old French

“A technique of documentary photo journalism that tells a story entirely through pictures”

FAQs

If I haven’t answered your questions here please don’t hesitate to ask me.

Do we need to get dressed up?

Not at all. In fact, I’d prefer you don’t! I want to capture life as it really is, and unless you always wear matching outfits, getting dressed up isn’t ‘real-life’. Think of it like this, in 20 years when you sit around the kitchen table with your kids or grandchildren, would you rather remember ‘when that happened’ or ‘when a photographer asked you to do that’?

WHAT’S CHANGED BECAUSE OF COVID-19?

It's hard to say what the situation will be on your day. I'm there to document your day with beautiful photographs - I'm not responsible for your guests' safety! I won't police social distancing; however, I will follow the latest government guidance regarding COVID-19. And I won't ask your guests to go against government advice.

IS ALL OF YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY BLACK AND WHITE?

I tend to deliver a 50/50 split of colour and black and white unless you have a strong preference either way. Most my couples share my love of black and white.

While I love colour photographs, I specialise in black and white photography. It cuts straight to the moment, removing the distractions of colour.

Good photographers will tell you it's hard to make inspiring black and white artwork. You have to train yourself to almost see without colour, looking for light, layers and balance in the fast-paced moments.

Let me know if you love black and white as much as I do and want 100% of your gallery to be black and white. I'll give you a free print from your gallery for being so bad-ass. I’ll need to know ahead of your session as it will subtly change the way I work.

CAN WE SECURE a DATE IN YOUR CALENDAR?

Of course! You only need to pay a 50% booking fee and complete a contract to secure your date.

When can we expect our photos?

It can depend on your plans. My normal turnaround is around 4-6 weeks. Although, I do offer a rush service if you need your photos sooner.

I’ll send you a few preview photos a day or two after the shoot so you have something ahead of getting your online gallery.

What’s the best way to store our photos?

All of my packages include an online gallery of all your amazing photos that you will be able to download and keep safe, and of course share with your family and friends. But honestly, these photos aren’t for now, they’re for the future. They’re for you to show your kids, your grandkids in years to come. And experience a priceless moment sharing the memories and emotions of your day with the most important people around you.

That’s why I believe printing your memories is important. Not only does a print breath life in to your photos, quality prints will last a lifetime when cared for. We’ve all lost digital files when we lose phones or hard drives fail. I’d be heart broken to learn one of my families lost their photo’s.

OUR PLANS AREN’T NEAR YOU, IS THERE AN ADDITIONAL CHARGE FOR YOU TO TRAVEL?

I will travel to wherever your plans are. I have an additional charge for sessions two hours or more from Rochester, Kent. Enquire for details.

Are you insured?

Yes! I have professional insurance. I’m more than happy to provide proof if your venue needs it.

HOW MANY PHOTOS WILL WE RECEIVE?

The cost of your session covers my time, my experience, and any physical products included in your package.

Due to the natural and unposed nature of my work, I can’t tell you exactly how many photos I’ll deliver as it will completely depend on your plans. But I can guarantee very high quality. As a guide, I tend to deliver 200+ quality photos after a full day session.

I love your work, how do we book?

Awesome! Fill out the form on my enquiry form and I’ll get back to you soon. I look forward to talking with you!
